The Apartment @ The Curve

The year end is a great time to go shopping. Plus it was a weekend! So taking the sales and the weekend crowd into account... Why not? So Leng Chai and I bundled into the car and headed off to a day of shopping... and food.

This time around we decided to try a relatively new place called The Apartment. The management wanted to convey the feeling of being in your very own, well, apartment, I guess. There were cushions, flower beds, and long wooden dining table, bookshelf. It would seem to be a very up-scale apartment to me.

They have a wide variety of cocktails and house pours. However the menu was a little sparse.

Raspberry cooler with water.

Local mussels cooked in The Apartment style. Comes with fresh bread. It can easily feed 3. The Apartment dressing is made from lime juice, chillies and ginger. It's very good.

Lemon Sole with mashed potatoes and watercress (I think) salad. Leng Chai ordered this out of curiosity. I loved the mash but not so fond of the salad. There was no dressing on it. Some balsamic vinegar would have been nice.

My dish of Andrew's Pasta. My personal recommendation is to find a friend to eat this with you. The portions are quite big! The pasta comes with baby potatoes.

The dishes were quite filling. Or perhaps we stuffed ourselves silly on the bread dipped in the mussel sauce. Prices range from RM10-RM50. I didn't really like the pasta as the sauce clung to the fettuccine and made it very 'heavy'.

Johnny's Restaurant @ Berjaya Times Square

Thai Tea
Comic Fiesta 2007 was a blast and after 2 days to costuming, dealing and being quished like mashed potatoes, CK and I sat down to a nice quiet meal at Johnny's. Not wanting to overburden our ravenous selves, we decided on the dinner set instead of the usual steamboat. The main course comes with Thai Tea which tasted pandan-ish, the soup of the day and ice-cream for dessert. All for the toal of RM5.80.

Green Tea Noodles with Chicken
CK found the noodles to his liking and he said that the taste of the green tea went well with the chicken.

Tom Yam Mee Hoon
The tom yam came with king prawns. It wasn't very fresh though. The soup was good. With all the spices in place and good for those who has an average Malaysian's tastebuds. Nevertheless, I would have liked mine to be a tad spicier. The portion for the tomyam was quite big and I think that 2 people could have easily shared the meal.

Delicious Cafe @ I Utama

After a day of work-clothes shopping, Nemo, Leng chai and I decided to head on to Delicious for a late night bite. Mind you, this was a 9pm dinner.

Death by Chocolate

Yes, we needed a chocolate fix. However the chocolate syrup was all frozen to the spoon. It would have been nicer if the chocolate could have been mixed first before adding in the ice-cream.

Ceaser Salad
A personal fave or mine. In all it's simplicity of turkey bacon and poached egg with their own 'croutons', it's a salad that will make you forget all other Ceaser salads that you ever had! You may choose to add chicken or salmon to it but I prefer mine plain and simple. The cafe also serves other salads such as Thai Beef Salad and Gado-Gado.

French Onion Soup

Four Cheese Macaroni
Beware of the cheesiness of this dish. It is after all, called Four Cheese Macaroni. The dish is great to share between people as no one can take in that much of cheese at one go. A great side dish to a main course if you wish to dabble your palatte in something else. The salad that comes with it made me wish that it had some dressing on it. A dash of lemon juice or olive oil would have been a nice touch.

Blackberry Apple Crumble

Tiramisu in a glass

DELIcious cafe made a name for itself through its' desserts and through word of mouth lead me there. So the desserts are a must try. Although names such as Lemongrass Mango Cheesecake may sound a bit daunting, the taste is one to remember.

Bao Bao Restaurant @ Pandan Indah

One of my favourite places for pan meen! It's the Bao Bao Pan Meen! They have branches at Aman Suria and Bandar Puchong Jaya.

I never knew about the place until CK brought me to this place when I first visited him at his house. And that was 3 years ago. Until now no Pan Meen has ever measured up to that...in my books.

Avoid going there at lunch time or you may be faced waiting for quite awhile. The place is always packed irregardless of the heat of the day. But waiting for your pan meen is worth it.

This is my slurpy bowl of pan meen. With extremely nice fried tau foo pok, meat balls and flavourful soup. If you prefer, a side dish of fried ikan bilis will be given at extra cost.

The herbal tea and 4 different kinds of chillies. There used to be 6 kinds but I think 4 is still more than enough.

Seo Gung @ SS2

Roasting beef on the grill

Ahhh... this rainy day brings CK and I to Seo Gung for some nice piping off straight off the fire. And in this case, literally. Seo Gung was recommended to us by Yean Peng who loved their citron tea. This place can be bit pricey though if you don't go with the sets offered. Serving mostly pork and beef, it's a piggy heaven for me and not for CK.

Hot coals are placed under the grill to cook your meat to perfection. However I felt that it would have been nicer if we were left to grill the meat by ourselves instead of the waiter coming to it for us. For those not used to such hands-on experience, a waiter can then be called.

I really wanted to grill the meat myself.

Some of the numerous side dishes.

Bibimpap

This dish is the staple dish in every Korean restaurant. I am hooked onto this dish and seek it out wherever I go. The portions were slightly larger than normal but the sauce was a bit weak. The waiter wanted to take away my fun of mixing up my own meal. Luckily I managed to stop him in time.
Kimchi soup with pork
Homemade kimchi is the best as no kimchi is alike for any Korean family. In the soup, it tastes even better. It warmed the cockles of my heart.

Lemang @ Tmn Seri Sentosa, Off Old Klang Road

It only happens during Raya. When you see great bonfires being lit and strange bamboo rods being smoked... It is the season of LEMANG!!!

And me being a lemang fan, couldn't help the temptation of the sticky glutinous rice! After trying various 'lemang's, I would have to say that the best one ( in terms of size and money value) would be in Taman Seri Sentosa, opposite Checker hypermart.

This is the medium sized lemang that I bought for RM8. The larger ones are going for RM9. A portion enough to feed 4!

And lemang can never go wrong with curry. Please note that this lemang stall does not sell curry. The curry is my own.

Lemang is only available for a limited time only!

Lemang Stall,
Jalan Taman Seri Sentosa,
Bt 6 1/2, Jalan Klang Lama,
58000 Kuala Lumpur
Open: 12pm until lemang finishes. :)

(To get here, drive to Old Klang Road from KL. After passing by the Puchong Police Station towards PJ, keep an eye out for the Taman Seri Sentosa signboard just before a traffic light on your left. Turn in and keep driving past the shophouses, condos and the petrol station. Slow down after 500 m and you will see Checkers on your left. The lemang stall is directly opposite it on the right)

Taiwan House @ Ampang

For a change CK and I decided to revisit a shop that we hadn't been to for a year.

If you ever needed a beef noodle fix and happen to be in Ampang, do drop by here! Their first outlet is in Ampang Point but that place was getting clautrophobic so they set up a second 2-storey branch near the Habib Jewels just outside the mall.
The menu is relatively quite simple. With sets costing RM9, the main meal comes with a bowl of soup and a drink . Chinese tea or Winter melon. If beef doesn't strike your fancy, there is always fishball noodles, chicken noodles, dumplings, etc.

I went for the rice beef set. However I felt disappointed when I was served. The portion seemed smaller than what it used to be in the past and the sauce was flavoured in ajinomoto. Thirst grabbed at me when I was done. Furthermore the potato salad accompanying my rice was a tad sad with 5 pieces of potato sticks and carrot sticks!

CK opted for the dry beef noodles and he faired better. He had a good portion of the noodles with juicy beef.

Isthmus @ Northpoint Midvalley KL

For my birthday, Vics, MK and Gene decided to celebrate it in a little more upscale manner. Upscale on the budget I mean... Maybe to reflect our maturing years or the guys maturing wallets? ahhahaha!

So off we went to Isthmus, KL. It is located in Northpoint Midvalley. No, it is not North Court of Midvalley. If you read this wrong, you may be circling North Court for many hours and never find this place. It is actually across the road from the big San Fransisco Coffee House.
There are 2 ways to get here.
1. Park car in Northpoint. The way to the parking lots is a sharp corner form the main road. So
be careful.
2. Park at Midvalley and walk across using the pedestrian bridge.

Vics and I opted for the former as it was a weekend and we didn't fancy driving around aimlessly in the Midvalley parking. Furthermore, the weekend rates doesn't differ that much from the Northpoint parking rates. Our 2 friends however, was unfortunate to wander around North Court.
I took this photo from my seat. The interior exudes a chic, yuppie feeling. But you won't find yourself worrying about it when the cooling interior is a welcome change from the hot and humid weather.
Long dangly lights form the ceiling. I bet it looks even better when it's night.

When it came down to eating, we all decided to go with the set lunches as we didn't want to order too much food and end up not being able to finish it. So the final decision was 3 set lunches of lamb (RM30 each) , and 1 set lunch of spaghetti(RM26). We also ordered the WoW platter to share. Each set lunch came with complimentary Fizzy Punch and coffee or tea at the end of the meal. I decided to order some dessert as well.

This here is the WoW Platter. Note the portions...and note 4 people....
In the middle, is the avocado and eggplant in a green sesame coriander puree. On the top right corner, you see the 2 things that looks like burger patties? Those are lentil patties. Bottom right is the oyster shooter. The blue things you see over there are blue lotus dumplings and of course, salmon. Price :RM52.00

You can also order all the above separately. However, the WoW platter is a good way to sample most of the appetizers available at Isthmus without breaking your bank.
I am not a big fan of avocado so I will be biased towards it! Vics on the other hand commented that the avocado was nicely done.

The lentil patties tastes really good and for those bean-hating people out there, fear not! You can't taste the 'bean' taste in it. I think it is pan-fried as the top is dry and crunchy and the insides were a little moist. It came with sour plum chili sauce.
As for the blue lotus dumplings, I was informed by Vics that the coloring used came from the bunga telanga. The shape was delicate and for the briefest moment I thought it was a pity to eat something so cute. Nevertheless I dug in and inside of those blue dumplings were minced chicken. The taste was slightly unusual but good. Perhaps, my usage of 'unusual' came from the feeling that the dumpling skin encasing the minced chicken was a little too thick for my liking. There was too much 'flour' taste and not enough 'meat' taste.
The fresh salmon roll had a dressing of mayo with a hint of wasabi in it. As for the shooters, it was supposed to be oysters in vodka. I was a little apprehensive getting liqueured in the afternoon but it was worth a try. Nevertheless, all I could taste in the shooter was chili-lime(think chicken rice chili) sauce with the tiniest hint of vodka! The oyster was good and there was no sea-smell accompanying it. I just ate the oyster without the chili-lime as I could feel my taste-buds not comprehending it. Too overpowering!

For the set starter, I chose tomato soup. Slightly tangy and with a hint of spiciness, it makes a good soup on a cold day. It really opens up your appetite.
MK is seen here with the other starter that comes with the set lunch. His was a salad with lovely virgin olive oil dressing.
My main course was seafood spaghetti with clams, squids and big prawns in it. The portion was quite generous for me and I ended up giving away some to the guys. The rest had the lamb loin.
The lamb was tender and was quite good. It had juices retained in the meat.
I shall upload the photos of the main course later once I get it.
After lunch, came the dessert. Normally I don't order dessert but since this lunch was in occasion of my birthday, I decided to give it to myself. I ordered a Milano Tiramisu with Kahlua liqueur (EM 15). It tasted heavenly with hints of Kahlua in the cake. See the brown layers? That's where the Kahlua is.
In the background, you can see our Fizzy punch and coffee.
Vics had the Nashi Pear done with wine reduction and black sesame ice cream(Rm 15). I liked the pear. The wine could not be tasted but the cooking method reduced the sweetness of the pear until it was just right. (photos uploaded later)

Isthmus is a place for the yuppie crowd. Although pricey, it is a place to open your tastebuds to new ideas. They also do cocktail events.
